Tips on Avoiding PVC School Supplies

Art Supplies
- avoid PVC in smocks. Avoid modeling clays made of PVC (polymer clays such as Fimo and Sculpey)

Backpacks
- avoid backpacks with shiny plastic designs as they often contain PVC and may contain lead.

Clothing and Accessories
- look for PVC-free materials in raincoats, rainboots, prints on clothing and accessories such as handbags, jewelry and belts.

Lunchboxes and Food-wrap
- use cloth lunch bags or metal lunchboxes. Many plastic lunch boxes are made of or lined with PVC.
- Use PVC-free butcher paper, waxed paper, parchment paper, low density polyethylene (LDPE) or cellulose bags for food-wrap.

Notebooks
- avoid notebooks with metal spirals encased in colored plastic as it usually contains PVC.

Paperclips
-stick to the plain metal paperclips. Colored paper clips are coated with PVC.

Three-Ring Binders
- use cardboard, fabric-covered, or polypropylene

Chemicals on School Supplies

A few days ago, I read from Philippine Star by Rhodina Villanueva that Environmental group EcoWaste Coalition has asked the Department of Trade and Industry or DTI to test commonly used school supplies for toxic chemicals. They are particularly concerned about the continued use of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or plastic number 3, in school supplies and toys.

PVC is considered a poisonous type of plastic because of the use of cancer-causing chemicals to manufacture it. IT also leaches chemical additives such as cadmium, lead, organotins and phthalates when used and produces dioxins when burned.

Pthalates which are PVC softeners or plasticers, can cause life-long health problems such as autism, asthma, as well as developmental, nervous, reproductive and respiratory problems.

New York Based non-government organization Center for Health, Environment and Justice (CHEJ) has published the "Back-to-School Guide to PVC-Free School Supplies" which offers practical tips on avoiding toxic school supplies. They advised not to buy backpacks with shiny plastic designs, plastic lunchboxes and 3-ring binders.

Filipino Ingenuity

I was surprised to see last week that one of our warehouse staff is driving his invented motorcycle. My hubby tried driving it and it works fine. Its just a little bit low for him.

Filipinos are really fond and good in inventing things from scrap like this motorcycle. Would you believe that these are parts of parts and joined together? This is indeed a recycling process..

This is my entry for Mellow Yellow Monday, Blue Monday and Ruby Tuesday. The Yellow and Red colors there are made of vinyl stickers. These are also scrap from our production of stickers.

Yard Art Thursday

I took this photo when we went to Island Cove's Animal Island. As I was walking and taking pictures of animals, I came across this nice design then suddenly remember of Yard Art.

Consider this my first post and hopefully not the last for Yard Art Thursday.

A Greener Visa Application

The United States Embassy in the Philippines has formally announced that beginning May 24, 2010, all non-immigrant visa (NIV) applicants who are planning to visit the United States whould have to secure an application online as they aim to promote a greener, pro-environment, user friendly visa application process.

But for those applicants who have paper forms and with scheduled appointments before May 24 is still valid and will be accepted.

The new online application form replaces there paper forms, so it should be easier and faster for applicants to complete their applications. This way reduces use of paper, making it a greener method in securing a US Visa.

However, the rest of the application is still the same as visa applicants must schedule an interview appointment after completing their online application. The interview appointment schedule may either be done online at https://philippine.us-visaservices.com or by calling 1-909-101-7878.

Island Cove's Trash Bin

We went yesterday with the kids to Island Cove's Animal Island. It was my first time to visit that place and I am amazed. The place is really good for family outing.

While strolling their Animal Island, I could not help but take a photo of their trash bin. It looks so colorful and neat, you wont get confused where to throw your trash.

Good Job Island Cove!! Two thumbs up for you!

Becoming a Carbon Neutral

This blog does not only promote Mother Earth but also it is now a certified carbon neutral blog! I am happy for this advocacy as I cannot really plant a tree because I live in the city. But hey, by participating in this campaign of Kaufda, one tree is to be planted at Plumas’.

carbon neutral coupons and shopping with kaufDA.de

If you wish to join, here is the mechanics. Lets spread this word!

Just write a short blog post about our programme “My blog is carbon neutral” and include one of the buttons below on your site (ideally in the sidebar). Send the link to your blog to CO2-neutral@kaufda.de and we plant a tree for you, neutralising the carbon dioxide emissions of your blog. The trees will be planted in the spring of 2010 by the Arbor Day Foundation. For more information about how and where the trees are planted, see the NEWS section.

Just a few easy steps to make it green:

1. Write a blog post about the initiative + insert your favourite button
2. E-mail the link to your post to CO2-neutral@kaufda.de
3. We plant a tree for your blog in Plumas’!

Lets spread the good news to fellow blogger. The more post, the more trees, the better for the environment.
